Lawrence L. Lapin
Shoemaker-Levy was the segmented comet that plowed into Jupiter toward the end of the last century. It was named after its discoverers, as was the tradition.
Suppose an amateur astronomer discovers a similar comet, only to find out that its trajectory has been tugged by Jupiter’s large moon and is now aimed at Earth. Would the star gazer like her name associated with it?
A more prophetic name for such an object would be “Icarus,” after the character from Greek mythology who wanted to fly. He and his father made wings from feathers, attaching them with wax to their arms. They flew, the legend tells. But Icarus ignored his father’s advice about the Sun’s heat. He flew so long and high that the wax melted, causing the wings to break off and Icarus to fall from the sky.
Like Icarus the man, Icarus the comet would fly too close to the Sun, only to then fall from Earth’s sky.
You can read about such a comet. It is at the heart of the story in my book, Adam’s Caverns.
The epic survival tale begins, as Book I of Adam’s Chronicles tells of the world facing pending impact by a gigantic meteor. Adam Boatwright faces his greatest challenge: preparing for the collision and dealing with the aftermath of the massive calamity.
When all hope of saving the planet is lost, the rescuers hole up in a deep cavern to wait out the catastrophe. Their story deals with worthiness of the human race, family planning, reproductive politics, planned mutations, cloning, animal rights, immortality, sexual preferences, and what life to restore. They encounter betrayal, career crises, shattered dreams, sacrifice, and renewal.
The common thread of this book is science, discussed in ordinary language. Subjects include controlled evolution, intelligence enhancements, non-cryogenic embryo storage, expanded animal-human communications, and prolonged cessation of the aging process.
