Lawrence L. Lapin
Take a look at the moon through binoculars and you will see a globe pocked with thousands of craters—all caused by impact from fast-flying space rocks. The solid worlds in our solar system have all experienced similar fates. The process is ongoing.
A few years ago, astronomers were treated to the spectacle of a giant comet hitting Jupiter at high speed. They watched in fascination as a “train” of objects hit the giant planet one-at-a-time over several hours.
Nothing would stop a similar event on our own planet. Earth has suffered huge meteor impacts before, and they will happen again. Nobody knows when.
Earth encounters small meteors quite regularly, and most burn up in our atmosphere, presenting a pleasant show. Usually those meteors are so tiny that they end as non-impacting vapor. But on rare occasions, bigger objects do fall from the sky, presenting us with a rocky meteorite as physical evidence.
Far rarer, even bigger meteor collisions can be disastrous to planetary life, even causing mass extinctions. The most infamous occurrence was the impact responsible for eliminating the dinosaurs.
History indicates that every few million years our planet will experience such calamity. The next celestial catastrophe could bring mankind to an end.
We might have the capability to move an object so that it avoids Earth. But that would take planning and lots of money. We can’t even get the will to tax ourselves to fix our highways. Adam Boatwright can’t save Earth. But he can save lots of life that might otherwise be lost.
This is just a small part of the story in my book, Adam’s Caverns.
The epic survival tale begins, as Book I of Adam’s Chronicles tells of the world facing pending impact by a gigantic meteor. Adam Boatwright faces his greatest challenge: preparing for the collision and dealing with the aftermath of the massive calamity.
When all hope of saving the planet is lost, the rescuers hole up in a deep cavern to wait out the catastrophe. Their story deals with worthiness of the human race, family planning, reproductive politics, planned mutations, cloning, animal rights, immortality, sexual preferences, and what life to restore. They encounter betrayal, career crises, shattered dreams, sacrifice, and renewal.
The common thread of this book is science, discussed in ordinary language. Subjects include controlled evolution, intelligence enhancements, non-cryogenic embryo storage, expanded animal-human communications, and prolonged cessation of the aging process.
