Human-ness, Ape-ness, and Genetic Intervention

Adam’s Chronicles is concerned with restoring life to Earth following a meteor disaster that kills-off most species. Surviving humans take on the task of restoring life to the Planet. They need all the help they can get, especially from the apes, which have been restored early and raised amongst them.

We can learn much about human-ness by watching apes, our genetically closest cousins. Book I of Adam’s Chronicles focuses two groups of great apes, chimpanzees and bonobos. Those cohabiting primates have been fostered out of necessity due to temporary human inability to reproduce. Some apes would go on to live wild, while others would live amongst humans as hairy people. Their first infants, mothered by humans, will receive dietary supplements of mind-enhancing chemicals and grow up to be highly intelligent.

In one sense, Adam’s Chronicles takes animal rights to a new level, bringing two groups of beings onto an equal plane with humans. These hairy ones become full-fledged members of a new multi-species society. But that is not enough for those domestic creatures: they want to have certain physical human characteristics.

Hairy people would thus become new species, apart from their ancestors. (An analogy would be dogs vis-a-vis wolves.) The non-humans prevail upon scientists to genetically manipulate them so that their children will walk upright on two legs, just like humans. They also want to vocalize their speech like “proper” people instead of using sign language. They will adopt human characteristics, such as modesty. Hairy people in my stories wear clothing to cover embarrassing genital folds and to demonstrate equality with humans.

The hybrid society brings unforeseen problems and many benefits.
