Lawrence L. Lapin
Presently, little is being done to actively prevent a space object from hitting Earth. Tracking is done mainly of large asteroids and other big objects whose trajectories follow wide orbits about the Sun. Many surprise objects are seen, but they would all be unstoppable under our current lack of readiness.
History has proven that an impacting object does not have to be very large to destroy life. Analysis of the iridium debris layer from the 65-million-year-old dinosaur-killing meteor suggest it was just six kilometers wide.
Could we detect another object that size? It may be possible, but I am unaware of any government-sponsored telescopes dedicated to the mission of looking for one. And, knowing that a big object might be headed toward Earth does not solve the problem of preventing impact. Large space objects travel very fast, so a threat would have to be detected early enough to stop it.
And how would we intercept a space object now millions of miles from Earth and travelling 50,000 mph? The threat would have to be reached by our defensive probe, before it became too close. And, just how would we stop it? A nuclear blast would likely breakup a rocky asteroid, scattering large pieces, some of which might still hit Earth. That might be worse than doing nothing.
Some suggest that a fast-moving object be nudged into an Earth-avoiding trajectory. To accomplish that, our deployed interceptor would have to touch down on the threatening mass. We know it’s possible because we actually have landed space probes on asteroids. But such a mission would have to be done in a timely fashion. And, technology for shifting an orbit has not been developed.
So, we’re doing hardly anything now about a threat that might wipe us out. Something ought to be done. Do we have the will to do what it takes? We can’t even control our own pollution. Let’s hope a big rock doesn’t hit before we get our act together.
Meanwhile, we might follow the example of the life rescuers in my book, Adam’s Caverns, and begin securing the means to recover from a devastating astronomical event that we’re doing virtually nothing to prevent.
The epic survival tale begins, as Book I of Adam’s Chronicles tells of the world facing pending impact by a gigantic meteor. Adam Boatwright faces his greatest challenge: preparing for the collision and dealing with the aftermath of the massive calamity.
When all hope of saving the planet is lost, the rescuers hole up in a deep cavern to wait out the catastrophe. Their story deals with worthiness of the human race, family planning, reproductive politics, planned mutations, cloning, animal rights, immortality, sexual preferences, and what life to restore. They encounter betrayal, career crises, shattered dreams, sacrifice, and renewal.
The common thread of this book is science, discussed in ordinary language. Subjects include controlled evolution, intelligence enhancements, non-cryogenic embryo storage, expanded animal-human communications, and prolonged cessation of the aging process.
