Expecting Nuclear Winter, Life Restorers Get New “Dinosaur Killer”

My earlier post tells of the big falling rock responsible for killing-off the dinosaurs. Imagine the calamity from a ten-times bigger meteor hitting Earth. A condition known as “nuclear winter” might shroud the Planet in gases and dust for years. Should anyone survive, they would inhabit a world nearly devoid of life. It would be like a volcanic island risen from the sea and beginning to take on life anew.

The Kilauea lava flows in Hawaii is a good example of what survivors might encounter. The crater area is surrounded by lush acreage that was once in the same condition. Yet, this tropical paradise is the remotest spot on Earth, thousands of miles from the nearest land. Every few millennia a new plant or animal would arrive by accident—not to the Hawaiian Islands we know—but to an earlier island in the chain, now worn away and under the sea.

A log from South America would land on shore, and a coconut would sprout. A stowaway bug would establish itself, living off the new plant growth. Slowly, very slowly, new plants and animals would arrive. And living things would island hop to their new neighbors, evolving over millions of years of continuing volcanic renewal.

For an Earth recovering from a gigantic meteor crash, there would be no far away land from which plants and animals would arrive to colonize barren places. If Earth were to have some remanence of what it what once had, people would have to save it from before and assist in the Planet’s recovery.

A fictional account of that effort is told in my book, Adam’s Caverns, a tale that begins with preparations to save life from nuclear war and ends with the beginnings of a lengthy recovery from a new “dinosaur killer.”

The epic survival tale begins, as Book I of Adam’s Chronicles tells of the world facing pending impact by a gigantic meteor. Adam Boatwright faces his greatest challenge: preparing for the collision and dealing with the aftermath of the massive calamity.

When all hope of saving the planet is lost, the rescuers hole up in a deep cavern to wait out the catastrophe. Their story deals with worthiness of the human race, family planning, reproductive politics, planned mutations, cloning, animal rights, immortality, sexual preferences, and what life to restore. They encounter betrayal, career crises, shattered dreams, sacrifice, and renewal.

The common thread of this book is science, discussed in ordinary language. Subjects include controlled evolution, intelligence enhancements, non-cryogenic embryo storage, expanded animal-human communications, and prolonged cessation of the aging process.
