Explaining the Start of Cancer

Cancer is a central focus in my book, Adam… Forever. The story revolves around Dr. Adam Boatwright’s urgent need to head-off familial breast cancer in his wife Vera. Both take extreme stances on what ought to be done, so that compromise proves impossible. Much controversy plays out, details of which are not dwelled on here.

Adam adheres to conventional wisdom that a cancer is started by an error in a single dividing cell. During a person’s lifetime, her cells will divide as many as fifty or more times, though Adam knows it’s extremely rare for any splitting cell to launch a cancer.

Errors in dividing cells are a natural part of life. Such mistakes will be mostly benign, though the inaccuracies will accumulate over time. Even erroneous cells copy themselves, carrying their mutations on to daughter tissues. And newer cells are increasing prone to errors as a body ages. That’s why older people wrinkle and go gray.

Cancer cells are different in that they are practically immortal. When they split, they tend to create daughters exactly like their mother cells. Those little parasites will multiply, get in the way, and eventually interfere with bodily functions, causing the host to die. Left undisturbed, cancer cells remain immortal to the end.

Adam finds a way to stop the cell errors themselves, thereby preventing cancer. He fears that would come at a significant cost to the future species.

Prequel to the Adam’s Chronicles series. The story tells how geneticist and surgeon, Adam Boatwright, uses his skills to prevent his wife’s impending cancer. Adam engineers a super virus that continually generates chemicals that fight off viruses and cancer.

As a test, Adam infects himself with that mutant virus. But the side effect is prevention of aging, and he becomes virtually immortal. Convinced that long lives would destroy the human race, Adam becomes caught in a web of intrigue and conspiracy as he tries to stop profiteers from exploiting his super virus.
