Bringing Back Mammoths

Woolly mammoths disappeared from North America about ten-thousand years ago. Humans have been blamed for their disappearance, though climate change might be culpable too. Complete carcasses of these ancient elephant relatives are still being found, frozen in melting ice. At least once, meat from one of them has been served at a meeting of explorers.

If the flesh was good enough to be eaten at a banquet, couldn’t certain organs be found in preserved condition?

In my story, Adam… Forever, a frozen mammoth female was found on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. The main characters would use that discovery to publicize ongoing programs for species preservation. Dr. Adam Boatwright suggests going a couple of extra steps, and he travels with his colleague to examine the carcass. Adam hopes to find preserved embryos frozen inside the mammoth’s womb. If so, he would implant them in elephant surrogate moms, thereby bringing back the species from extinction.

Though improbable, this might be the simplest way to restore a long-extinct species. In my later story, Adam’s Pouched Lion, a marsupial lion is brought back to life by first determining its genome from a bone fifty-thousand years old. That DNA map is used to patch together pieces of DNA to make one whole, from which advanced procedures (largely science-fictional, for now) are used to clone an embryo of the long-dead animal, which might then be planted into a living distant relative to be its surrogate birth mom.

Prequel to the Adam’s Chronicles series. The story tells how geneticist and surgeon, Adam Boatwright, uses his skills to prevent his wife’s impending cancer. Adam engineers a super virus that continually generates chemicals that fight off viruses and cancer.

As a test, Adam infects himself with that mutant virus. But the side effect is prevention of aging, and he becomes virtually immortal. Convinced that long lives would destroy the human race, Adam becomes caught in a web of intrigue and conspiracy as he tries to stop profiteers from exploiting his super virus.
