Lawrence L. Lapin
A previous posting questions superhero Adam’s strategy of limiting the Planet’s population to about a million people. He finds the ceiling inadequate for building an infrastructure needed to deter another astronomical disaster. Protecting Earth would require launching a new space program, and the Planet’s present population would be too tiny and lacks resources for that. Adam would like a world more like the one of his youth. That pre-meteor globe was in so many ways more advanced his present world.
So few people also limits regular restoration activities, which are far too old-fashioned for Adam’s taste. To that end, he wants to encourage more research on such things as artificial intelligence. That would demand better computing capabilities, similar to what existed before a large piece of Comet Icarus plowed into Earth, over five centuries before. Adam has also come to realize that more “boots on the ground” would be needed to further refine ecological balance for Earth’s restored life.
Yet Adam is concerned about the propensity toward overpopulation by all forms of life—indeed, by all species within any group. Adam is ambivalent about it all. He still believes limited population growth would be best. But what would be the optimal stopping point? Adam has lingering doubts, suspecting that no species has been effective at limiting its own growth through self-control alone.
Still, Adam would study the issue to find an optimal population level for human and hairy people.
