An Emerging Superhero

Adam Boatwright is an emerging superhero in my novel, Adam… Forever. He has some interesting credentials. Adam is a medical doctor and surgery professor, as well as a member of the genetics faculty. Before qualifying for those positions, he was medically discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps as a captain. It was during a clandestine campaign in the War on Terror that Adam had been badly wounded. During his last battle, the captain saved the lives of several marines, for which he received the Navy Cross. Disillusioned with military life, Adam went to Harvard Medical School. His combat injuries made a surgical career impractical, so Adam studied genetics and became a dual professor at Central University.

His first wife was deaf and taught Adam how to communicate in American Sign Language. It was before his last Marine deployment that she and his two daughters were killed by a train while crossing the tracks at an inoperable signal.

While a medical student Adam met his second wife Vera, who rekindled his capacity to love again. Vera became important in overcoming the severe hurdles presented in my story. Adam would go on to team with her on a string of adventures that comprise the first two books of Adam’s Chronicles, where Adam makes good use of his marine experience and employs his sign-language skills to communicate with apes.

Prequel to the Adam’s Chronicles series. The story tells how geneticist and surgeon, Adam Boatwright, uses his skills to prevent his wife’s impending cancer. Adam engineers a super virus that continually generates chemicals that fight off viruses and cancer.

As a test, Adam infects himself with that mutant virus. But the side effect is prevention of aging, and he becomes virtually immortal. Convinced that long lives would destroy the human race, Adam becomes caught in a web of intrigue and conspiracy as he tries to stop profiteers from exploiting his super virus.

I am fascinated by the quality of this book. … A wonderful blend of thrilling adventure, science fiction and romance. … It delivers on so many different levels. Well done—Dennis Waller, Top 500 Amazon Reviewer.

This story had every element … an exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. Abundance of well-illustrated scenes. … had me immersed from the beginning. The story flows … with ease, and the author shows exceptional skill when it comes to storytelling. … Twists and turns in this page turner … make you want to read it non-stop. … Highly recommended—Piaras, Amazon Reviewer.

Phenomenal series offers elements of the thriller, mystery, science fiction, and romance genres. Dr. Lapin’s novels are exciting, with wonderfully developed characters and situations—Jada Ryker, Top 1,000 Amazon Reviewer.

Mad scientist or brave hero? … A murder mystery, medical thriller, and science fiction novel all rolled into one. I recommend it highly—Diane Rapp, Amazon Reviewer.

A fast paced story so plausible that I had trouble figuring the line where science fact and science fiction resides. … That credibility made the debate about the desirability of immortality real instead of fantasy. … An entertaining read—Capt’n Bob, Amazon Reviewer.

Fearing Genetic Testing

A while back the news media blared the story about a famous actress who underwent pre-emptive breast surgery because she had a family history of breast cancer, which took the lives of her mother and sister. She had been tested positive for the BRCA gene believed responsible for their early deaths.

Some people refuse to be tested for known genes that signal hereditary diseases. They fear the stigma that such information might cast over their careers or medical insurability. Others would prefer to take their chances, feeling that a cure might be worse than the disease.

In my story, Adam… Forever, concert violinist Vera Boatwright refuses to undergo breast surgery. She gives two reasons: one is fear of losing her husband; the second is fear that her violin career would end because of damaged muscles. Since she would not have the surgery, she refuses to be tested for any genes that might be responsible for killing her mother and giving breast cancer to her sister.

Vera’s husband Dr. Adam Boatwright—a surgeon and geneticist—is perplexed by his wife’s stance. But he loves her very much and is desperate to find a solution.
