Lawrence L. Lapin
In my story, Adam… Forever, Dr. Adam Boatwright is joint professor of medicine and genetics. Like many scientists in the field, he is also interested in evolution. That seem natural, since the engine for evolution is genetic mutation. Through their lives, all biological beings experience such random changes to their DNA. Those are ordinarily of no consequence. But some mutations grant a creature’s descendants advantages, and those may experience better lives than the parents did.
When two groups of the same species are separated (perhaps, one inhabits a piece of land that breaks away from the other) the individuals will accommodate themselves to mutations a little differently. Over time, their descendants will become separate species. Brought back together, they would likely not interbreed.
Adam Boatwright likes to play out hypothetical evolutions in his head. From early childhood he has had a fascination with dinosaurs. He entertains his friends with a fantasy of how he might bring back a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Not an actual authentic T. Rex, mind you, but a replica. He would start with a chicken, changing its DNA to reverse the evolutionary process backwards, to the common ancestor of all birds. He notes that might cost billions and take centuries.
Continuing with those re-engineered animals, more DNA manipulations would bring back dinosaur-like creatures similar to the genuine and which closely agree with fossil evidence. Eventually, after spending more billions over added centuries, the team would have fierce creatures.
Adam notes that they would be phonies, just gross approximations to a real T. Rex.
Prequel to the Adam’s Chronicles series. The story tells how geneticist and surgeon, Adam Boatwright, uses his skills to prevent his wife’s impending cancer. Adam engineers a super virus that continually generates chemicals that fight off viruses and cancer.
As a test, Adam infects himself with that mutant virus. But the side effect is prevention of aging, and he becomes virtually immortal. Convinced that long lives would destroy the human race, Adam becomes caught in a web of intrigue and conspiracy as he tries to stop profiteers from exploiting his super virus.
