Navigation without GPS

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

It’s only been a decade or so since GPS navigation has been widely available to the public. The third letter in this ubiquitous abbreviation, “S,” stands for satellite. After a calamitous encounter with a big meteor, Earth would lose its navigation systems—more specifically, the ground stations for such. The satellites themselves may still keep circling Earth, but would do so without communications.

So, how would survivors cope?

Travelers in the recovering world would navigate just like the ancient mariners did, using stars, the sun, compasses, and time-measurement. Before radio, ship captains did a pretty good job at that.

Aviation navigation would be trickier, but still do-able. Flyers wouldn’t have much of an infrastructure. They would face extreme hazards, as search-and-rescue missions might be impractical, even impossible.

This world is what survivors of the dinosaur-killer sized meteor face in my story, Adam’s New World.

Adam's New World 0616 (Small)

Adam emerges as a full-fledged superhero. Book II of Adam’s Chronicles begins where Adam’s Caverns left off, with a handful of adults and their closely related children. All over the battered planet they are restoring life almost totally wiped out by the massive meteor. People are caught in a tight genetic funnel. To thrive, the two groups of surviving humans must pool their genetic material and carefully plan the next generations.

Adam Boatwright leads the genetic engineering necessary to give survival diversity to both animals and humans. The highly intelligent apes are in the process of being integrated into society and are treated as hairy people. Some request that Adam modify their genetic lines to permit speech and make it easier to walk on two legs. Others want to live in the wild, without humans and mind enhancing chemicals. Conflicts must be resolved.

The new society begins its long growth spurt, but transportation by boat is too time consuming and too dangerous. Infrastructure building starts with salvaging planes and ships. Stored fuels are running too low for that to work, and scarce gasoline must be replaced.

All the while, life must be restored and Adam must keep secret his long life, thereby protecting the future from traffickers in immortality. Can he orchestrate it all while directing a handful of middle-aged survivors with very young children, all spread widely over the planet?

Coping with Evolving Language

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Try to put yourself into the shoes of a virtually immortal person who must keep her long life a secret. She must still complete her mission, which is restoring life to a badly damaged planet, and she needs lots of help doing that. So, she pretends to gradually age, and then after 30 or 40 years she fakes her own death. Soon thereafter, she returns to the task while masquerading as her daughter or some unrelated person.

Nobody must realize the deceptions.

One “dead giveaway” would be her manner of speech. Unless our fraud perpetrator changes her accent, vocabulary, choice of idiom, and so forth, she will not pull it off.

This issue is tackled by Adam Boatwright, as he moves along the restoration activities for the damaged Earth. I won’t spoil his story for you, which is detailed in my Adam’s New World.

Nature Must Finish the Restoration Task

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Any large-scale human effort to restore extinct species would leave all the heavy-hitting to Nature. Eagles would relearn to hunt. Grazers would find the best browse by trial–and-error. New species would have to evolve to fill niches not occupied by the very few plants and animals that people might be able to restore.

Just how involved in ecological details must life restorers be? My belief is that no restoration effort would have sufficient tools for anything but a gross approximation.

For instance, how might the proper mix of trees in a forest be determined? Foresters have found that profoundly complex, with cyclical waves of species die-offs followed regeneration with different tree types. And, forest stability is a temporary phenomenon punctuated by fire, pestilence , and climate change.

So what species should be planted? Maybe all plants that once inhabited the local area. Nature would then perform the ever-changing balancing acts. New forests might be restarted, like new California lawns, with a twenty-species mixture of shade trees and conifers, plus a like group of shrubs and annuals.

A similar approach might rule species selection for fish.

One obvious regimen for reintroduction of all life is to restore only those species originally native to the region. After all, nature sorted things out over millions of years of evolution.

Some idea of how this would all pan out is given in my book,  Adam’s New World.

Humans Put Animals to Work—Isn’t that Slavery?

 Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

July 15, 2015

Humans have evolved using animals as beasts of burden and food. People have treated other humans as slaves. Suppose survivors of a great meteor impact want to use highly intelligent restored apes as farm hands and zoo keepers. Would those apes be slaves? Those apes and humans can communicate with signs. Doesn’t that make them really a different species of people, who should not be treated as slaves?

This is one of the many controversies and ticklish issues confronted in Adam’s Caverns.

Find out more about the story in my book,  Adam’s Chronicles.

Layout 1

The epic survival tale begins, as Book I of Adam’s Chronicles tells of the world facing pending impact by a gigantic meteor. Adam Boatwright faces his greatest challenge: preparing for the collision and dealing with the aftermath of the massive calamity.

When all hope of saving the planet is lost, the rescuers hole up in a deep cavern to wait out the catastrophe. Their story deals with worthiness of the human race, family planning, reproductive politics, planned mutations, cloning, animal rights, immortality, sexual preferences, and what life to restore. They encounter betrayal, career crises, shattered dreams, sacrifice, and renewal.

The common thread of this book is science, discussed in ordinary language. Subjects include controlled evolution, intelligence enhancements, non-cryogenic embryo storage, expanded animal-human communications, and prolonged cessation of the aging process.

Cooperation in a Thinly Populated World

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

The U. S. Navy communicates with submarines by very low-frequency radio. Those messages travel thousands of miles without relay, much analogous to the low-frequency sounds that elephants make in talking to friends miles away. A price paid for low-frequency radio communication is that it is very slow, much like an old-fashioned voice-line internet connection. (It used to take several minutes to send a fuzzy photo.)

Imagine communicating half-way around the planet with no satellites and no relays. That is how great-meteor survivors would have to cope. Like geeks in the 1980s, they could send emails with attachments—but those would travel very, very slowly.

This is how just one adaption people in Adam’s New World would cope with as they manage activities all over the planet.

Life Rescuers as Noble Scavengers

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Survivors of a dinosaur-killing magnitude catastrophe would have to fill many basic needs by scavenging on what remains, including shelter and transport. As noted in earlier blogs, most of the formerly habitable Earth would be a wasteland and barely recognizable. Those places with some trace of infrastructure would have mummified remains scattered about, mute testimony to the terror striking the planet. But the survivors would have to make use of whatever buildings and usable materials they could salvage, including clothing and other personal items. For public health, the dead would have to be cremated.

For centuries, the life restorers in Adam’s New World would be too pre-occupied replanting and nurturing animals to bother with making cloth or manufacturing new stuff. They would live a nomadic life, living in tents and walking in dead man’s shoes.

This epic survival tale is Book II of my Adam’s Chronicles.

Shocking Scenes for Catastrophe Survivors

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Much of Earth would be uninhabitable after another dinosaur-killer sized meteor hits. Not only would a substantial portion of the planet be scorched by fire, but coasts everywhere would be swept by giant tsunamis. Worst of all for any survivors would be the following years of dust-induced darkness during which plants would die and food could not grow. Humans and most animals would suffer the same fate as the dinosaurs.

Now suppose a small group of people manage somehow to arrange shelter and survive all of that. We have them still living when the sunshine returns. What might they encounter?

Devastation everywhere. Most animal carcasses would have been eaten by the last to die. People would have at first buried or cremated their own dead. But the last non-survivors would lay where they fell. Their corpses would haunt any lucky survivors. The fallen bodies would present grisly scenes and perhaps remain mummified for years in sterile air.

The survivors’ story is told in Adam’s New World, Book II for my Adam’s Chronicles series.

Genetic-Engineering a Talking Ape

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Genetic engineering encompasses attempts to splice genes to modify a lifeform’s DNA in some planned way. The net effect is like a mutation to the subject’s germ line (eggs, sperm) in the case of animals. Though, mutation is a term usually applied to natural or random changes. Challenges in making for such a change are finding what revisions are needed and identifying which DNA segment to splice. Those tasks are especially problematic, since gene locations within the DNA molecule are not completely known. Lots of trial and error might be expected.

Planned genetic changes to humans are quite controversial, and these have been accepted for some limited applications, such as eliminating the potential for hereditary diseases in a person’s future offspring. That is now achieved primarily by passive means, such as vowing to not have kids or by eliminating embryos with bad genes prior to in vitro procedures.

My story in Adam’s New World considers more aggressive genetic engineering in which germ-line DNA itself is modified. This brings fictional science into the story. (Many might classify it all as science fiction.) This is how two new species of persons might be created from apes, giving offspring key human features: the abilities to speak and to walk on two legs.

I am fascinated by the quality of this book. … A wonderful blend of thrilling adventure, science fiction and romance. … It delivers on so many different levels. Well done—Dennis Waller, Top 500 Amazon Reviewer.

This story had every element … an exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. Abundance of well-illustrated scenes. … had me immersed from the beginning. The story flows … with ease, and the author shows exceptional skill when it comes to storytelling. … Twists and turns in this page turner … make you want to read it non-stop. … Highly recommended—Piaras, Amazon Reviewer.

Phenomenal series offers elements of the thriller, mystery, science fiction, and romance genres. Dr. Lapin’s novels are exciting, with wonderfully developed characters and situations—Jada Ryker, Top 1,000 Amazon Reviewer.

Mad scientist or brave hero? … A murder mystery, medical thriller, and science fiction novel all rolled into one. I recommend it highly—Diane Rapp, Amazon Reviewer.

A fast paced story so plausible that I had trouble figuring the line where science fact and science fiction resides. … That credibility made the debate about the desirability of immortality real instead of fantasy. … An entertaining read—Capt’n Bob, Amazon Reviewer.

An Infrastructure for Life Restoration

Lawrence L. Lapin

It would take centuries to restore life to the planet after a “dinosaur-killing” type event. Even then, the loss of species would be so great that only a fraction could ever be brought back.

The restorers would need communications, as the task would involve all six continents, numerous islands, the great oceans, and countless seas, lakes, and rivers. They would need safe and fast means of transportation, best provided by an aviation system. The aircraft would need fuel, stored in strategic locations throughout the planet. Extracted fossil fuels might supply that energy, perhaps augmented by man-made additives. And, the fuel requirements would be substantial, so that ship transport would need to be re-established.

Above all else, life restorers would need lots of people to complete their huge mission. But there would be far too few people at the beginning. Those would be older men and women. Their children and grandchildren would have to continue the work, over very many generations. Young people would have to be educated and trained, all the while their parents would be doing the “heavy lifting.”

This is the challenge facing Adam Boatwright in my story, Adam’s New World.

Could Smart Apes Become a Species of People?

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Today’s people are all considered one human race. That wasn’t always the case. Modern humans were once thought to have replaced an older group of people, the Neanderthals. Now we know that Neanderthal genes are common to large groups of Homo sapiens. And, there is another ancient species, the Denisovans, whose genes were absorbed by ancestors of some of us. People are hybrids, and it seems we have always been in a state of flux.

The U.S. Constitution assumes all people are equal and have inalienable rights. And what constitutes a person?

Should an intelligent, speaking being who is not human be so treated? Could such an individual be a contributing member of society?

Suppose that desperate survivors of a meteor calamity foster apes through surrogate pregnancies and give them mind enhancing chemicals so make them as smart as humans. Suppose further that, through genetic manipulation, the children of those smart apes would speak and walk on two legs. And finally, suppose that humans grant them rights and privileges. Those beings would be hairy people.

This is part of the story line in Adam’s New World, Book II of my Adam’s Chronicles series.
