Dog-Breeding Approach to Getting New Species

 Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

There is probably no advanced species on Earth more varied than the domestic dog. Yet dogs range in size from teacup Chiauuas to tall Great Danes. They vary in behavior from Setters to Shepherds or from Pinschers to Malamutes. All are the same species and can interbreed.

Once thought to be descended from wolves, it is now believed that dogs and wolves are cousins and have a common ancestor. Research shows that modern dogs have co-evolved with people. And now people have modified dogs to do work and be cute.

But humans and dogs have not been cooperating long enough for separate canine species to emerge. (A key defining characteristic of a species is that members do not naturally interbreed with another species of similar kind. If such events occur, the hybrid offspring will usually be infertile, like mules obtained from horse and donkey.) Dogs have breeds instead. Left to their own devices, they will mix. But the offspring will always be a dog.

Dog breeding is not done with genetic tinkering on DNA. It is achieved simply by selective mating that favor a specific characteristic. Animals inferior for a particular trait, such as herding skill, are not allowed to comingle, while those having the desired property are given extra opportunities to breed. It is a comparatively passive way to achieve change.

A more vigorous way to get a particular characteristic would be to load the genetic dice by creating mutations. Radiation is one tool for doing that. The new generation would be an uncontrolled experiment, and drastic changes might result. Many resulting animals must be euthanized for humane reasons.

A more refined approach would be to change a handful of genes by splicing specific changes onto the DNA molecule itself. This requires lots of knowledge and advanced technology.

All three approaches are used in Adam’s Tiger, which incorporates the creation of new species. Beginning with Siberian Tigers, a Sabre-Toothed Cat will be created. The final result will not be an authentic pre-historic animal, but rather a gross approximation that fills the niche of the extinct target.

Adam's Tiger 0616 (Small)

Book III of Adam’s Chronicles moves 500 years into the future. Planet Earth is still recovering from a disastrous meteor impact. The centuries-long effort to bring back animals and plants—and mankind itself—is nearing its conclusion.

Humans make a small footprint in this renewed world, though ecological disaster is expected from explosive population growth. Changes are in the works, troubles are brewing, and Adam Boatwright worries about the future.

The long-lived geneticist vows to discourage mankind from again ruining the planet. He also takes on a new goal: to make life more robust while improving the platform for future evolution. In doing so, he would bring back animals driven to extinction by early humans, starting with woolly mammoths.

Bypassing Nature to Enrich Life Restorations

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Nature eventually brings forth species to fill every conceivable niche, though we may be slow to recognize the intricacies involved. People are still discovering heretofore unknown lifeforms. Maybe we have such an incredible richness of life that it is hard for us to see everything.

A trip to the Galapagos Islands might provide enlightenment regarding ecological niches. It was there that Charles Darwin really began putting together his evolutionary theories.

The Galapagos rose from the sea more recently than the Hawaiian chain, and by comparison they are very sparse. Yet I found quite startling the adaptations to island niches by accidentally arriving plants and animals. There are cacti with bark, similar to that of pines, daisies that grow into tall, woody trees, and giant tortoises—different varieties on several unconnected islands. In geological time, those species were created in an instant. But in human terms, they all evolved agonizingly slowly. Though its islands straddle the Equator, the Galapagos are mainly desert-like. I would expect those islands to eventually resemble the Hawaiian paradise. Maybe that would take about five million years.

Switching gears, let’s consider Earth undergoing life restorations after being hit by a giant meteor. From a human perspective, the recovering planet would be more like the Galapagos and less like Hawaii. Surviving humans could only save a tiny fraction of species from before, and a small fraction of previous life forms might regenerate without help.

Restorers would likely be disappointed in the results. They might be tempted to speed things up and to fill obvious niches with life they create themselves.

This is a major theme in Adam’s Tiger, in which people sometimes supplant Nature in creating new life.

Extinct North American Predators

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

We shouldn’t consider bringing back any herbivore without also restoring its predators. Those carnivores would weed out the sick and weak, thereby helping grazers stay fit.

What animals could do that job with mammoths?

Predation benefits might accrue from a restored saber-toothed cat. Those formidable predators would certainly have been powerful enough to control mammoths. Among creatures also benefiting from the big meat-eaters would be bison, which might have become overly abundant had not humans arrived to fill the extinct cat’s niche.

An analogous predator-prey relationship existed between the antelope and American cheetahs. History might have been very different if those fast-running predators survived into the present.

Finding predators for restored wildlife is an ongoing effort featured in Adam’s Tiger.

Extinct North American Megafauna

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

The term “megafauna,” conveys large animals that disappeared by the end of the Ice Ages. Mega is Greek for great, and fauna is Latin for animals. In North America those extinct behemoths included woolly mammoths, giant beavers, saber-toothed cats, and dozens more. Though die-offs were a world-wide phenomenon, Australia and the Americas suffered disproportionately.

North America would be a different place if the following five mammals had not gone extinct: mammoths, saber-toothed cats, camels, horses, and cheetahs. They are keystone species that had wide effects on other life.

What if they were brought back?

Mammoths might have acted very much like elephants, to which they are closely related. Elephants eat trees and shrubs, sculpting their forests and leaving openings for other plants. By comparison, America’s un-manicured forests are scraggly and unkempt. Perhaps mammoths would do a similar job in America. Maybe their ‘management’ would result in fewer devastating forest fires.

This is a situation unfolding in Adam’s Tiger.

Bringing Back Extinct Animals

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

What if the loss of one species led to further disappearances? A naturalist would want to prevent the original extinction. Most would applaud that.

If it were possible to bring back a species by importing a close relative, would that improve a present ecosystem? If so, might that be worth doing—at least on a trial basis?

We have a good example with the Canadian wolves brought to Yellowstone National Park. Those restored animals brought ecological benefits to the parklands.

But there were unintended consequences from bringing back those canine predators. As wolves reached a critical mass, some left protected areas to poach on ranching livestock or to relocate—bringing threats to quash the restoration.

Let’s this a step further. Suppose an ecological niche needs filling, and that its original occupant became extinct thousands of years ago. Would it be okay to use a similar animal as a substitute? Couldn’t there also be unintended consequences?

And what if an obvious replacement doesn’t exist?

A genetic engineer might create a new animal for that role. Though, the experimenter would be well-advised to first answer important questions.

What mistakes might be expected from releasing modified creatures? Can the geneticist ignore the experimental animals used in the process? Wouldn’t those critters have rights?

This is the situation that unfolds in Adam’s Tiger.

Forming an Embryo Collection for Species Restoration

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Suppose zoos join a cooperative arrangement to form an emergency collection of transplantable mammal embryos. They would want to maintain diversity within species, which might be easy with the more common zoo animals and smaller creatures. It would be harder with endangered species, such as giant pandas, which are difficult to breed in captivity and rare in the wild. And it would be extremely difficult to obtain needed embryos for big species, such as elephants.

Very large animals are dangerous to work with. I can only imagine how hard it might be to collect sperm from an elephant bull ready for mating. Even removing eggs from an elephant cow in estrous would be a challenge. Though inseminating her ova in a laboratory might be possible.

Imagine getting a blue whale embryo. A narcolepsy on a female accidentally hit by a ship would be a possibility for obtaining a transplantable embryo. (We’ll leave the eventual implantation in a ready female for another blog.)

Perhaps the best way to form the difficult items would to manipulate the eggs of a smaller species and switch the DNA. The genome for a target animal might be sequenced by using a blood sample. That placed the whole exercise into the realm of science fiction. After all, that to a large extent where this discussion is leading.

In my survival tale presented in Adam’s New World, a group of survivors of a gigantic meteor catastrophe must use such a collection of embryos to restore mammals made extinct.

Adam's New World 0616 (Small)

Adam emerges as a full-fledged superhero. Book II of Adam’s Chronicles begins where Adam’s Caverns left off, with a handful of adults and their closely related children. All over the battered planet they are restoring life almost totally wiped out by the massive meteor. People are caught in a tight genetic funnel. To thrive, the two groups of surviving humans must pool their genetic material and carefully plan the next generations.

Adam Boatwright leads the genetic engineering necessary to give survival diversity to both animals and humans. The highly intelligent apes are in the process of being integrated into society and are treated as hairy people. Some request that Adam modify their genetic lines to permit speech and make it easier to walk on two legs. Others want to live in the wild, without humans and mind enhancing chemicals. Conflicts must be resolved.

The new society begins its long growth spurt, but transportation by boat is too time consuming and too dangerous. Infrastructure building starts with salvaging planes and ships. Stored fuels are running too low for that to work, and scarce gasoline must be replaced.

All the while, life must be restored and Adam must keep secret his long life, thereby protecting the future from traffickers in immortality. Can he orchestrate it all while directing a handful of middle-aged survivors with very young children, all spread widely over the planet?

Health Care in Great Meteor’s Aftermath

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

With a couple of physicians and two veterinarians amongst a handful of survivors of a dinosaur-killing sized meteor, healthcare may be comparatively very good. These health professionals are part of the group of rescuers bringing life back to Earth. Their ultimate survival tale is featured in my book, Adam’s New World.

As far as these people know, they are the only humans left on the planet. There is no pharmaceutical industry left, and the only medicines available are those they brought themselves or which can be scavenged. They do have knowledge regarding all medicines patented and are great chemists, so much of what has been lost might be re-created, given enough time.

New treatments may be discovered, as was quinine, which originated by natives from a tropical tree’s bark, and other folk-type remedies could be tried as a last resort.

Would the Panama Canal Work after a Big Meteor Crash?

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Virtually nothing but raw Earth would likely be found near the impact point of a dinosaur killer. Damage levels to objects would drop as the distance away from impact increases, though coastlines anywhere on the planet might be affected, depending on sea floor topography and orientation. Tsunami damage would vary widely. One key facility would be the Panama Canal, a key strategic location during any potential recovery activity.

Let’s suppose that the canal would be unaffected by tidal forces, earthquakes, and other effects from a particular big meteor. It might still be usable after minor maintenance. After all, the original canal only has five pairs of parallel locks, each just a 1,000 feet long and raising ships by only about 40 feet. Most of the overland ship transit is through lakes and dredged portions of fixed elevation.

The Panama Canal might help Adam Boatwright’s planet rescuers complete their mission. Details are provided in Adam’s New World.

Naturally Regenerating Shrubs and Trees

Within a couple of thousand miles of the original dinosaur-killing meteor’s crash site, evidence has been found of devastating firestorms that must have burned everything, down to bare rock and soil. The impact footprint, off of the Yucatan Peninsula, indicates that much of North America was also swept by tsunamis. Could living things survive those twin disasters?

When sunshine returned, some plants might have grown back from deep roots. Perhaps a handful of hardy North American trees would have regenerated in the aftermath of that calamity. Even in the unburned and unflooded continents, most plants would have died in the darkness that followed. But the hardy survivors went on to re-green the planet and take new evolutionary paths.

The survivors of a similar calamity, presented in my story Adam’s New World, relied mainly on seeds stored from before. They did make use of regenerating plant materiel when there were opportunities to do so.

Getting Gasoline after a “Dinosaur Killer”

Modern infrastructures are still totally dependent on fossil fuels. Although we are desperate to replace them, our need for such a convenient energy will continue indefinitely. That might even be the case should nearly all life on the planet be killed by a massive meteor impact.

Survivors of such a calamity would face a world in which the only man-made things would be leftovers, like one or two carefully preserved airplanes stashed away in a high Alpine lake. The lucky people might even find a stash of aviation fuel. But eventually, if they want to keep flying, they would have to make their own.

The planet would have no operational refineries and nobody to staff them. There would be no way to extract oil from very deep wells that prevailed before. How could they restore the planet without being able to fly?

My story in Adam’s New World presents the answer.
