A Short Story on Whale Evolution

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Adam Boatwright is a geneticist and medical professor. The hero of my book, Adam… Forever, Adam daydreams his own short story of sea mammal evolution. It is all conjecture, almost fantasy, flashing through his mind while flying over the Aleutians in a small plane.

Everything started with a four-legged land carnivore that took long swims in the ancient sea, where fish were easier to catch than terrestrial prey. One pup was born with webbed feet, a random mutant genetic event. Not very mobile on the land, she performed better in water and outdid her siblings catching fish. Her own pups also had webbed feet. Over the span of several hundred years, the web-footedness gene spread throughout the original population and became more prevalent.

Adam spotted several isolated locations on lonely island shores that seemed ideal places for the next evolutionary stage. Over thousands of years, several more random genetic events created a race of better swimmers. Those aqua “wolves” resembled modern otters. Some migrated to new locations, losing all contact with the original web-footed group.

Adam’s mind wandered, letting the process continue through tens of thousands of years. One group did not change much, and adapted well to its environment. It separated from another group, which was changing to resemble modern seals as their pups became more streamlined and better suited for longer open-water living. A third group could survive without touching land. Some of their pups were born with nasal openings higher in their heads, becoming better breathers in rough seas. A further evolutionary milestone had been met.

Some of those animals bore offspring with extra surface body fat, giving them better protection in cold waters. Their fur was an impediment to fast swimming, and furless pups experienced slightly higher survivability than their hairy cousins. Over hundreds of thousands of years, the small, gradual changes accumulated, as the dominant furless group became more and more fishlike in form.

At that evolutionary milestone, Adam’s mental image had moved millions of years beyond that first web-footed “wolf.” The proto-whales had now spread around the globe. One family evolved with strainer plates in their mouths, allowing them to skim the ocean for food. They were primogenitors of modern baleen whales. Another group kept their teeth; their descendants evolved into today’s toothed whales and dolphins.

The above story was part of the early drafts of Adam… Forever. It was not included in the current published versions of the novel.

Genetically Engineering a Tyrannosaurus Rex

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Genetic science has become one of the hottest fields, making it very popular with the media and futurists. The excitement comes from several directions. Here are a few key influences on modern developments.

  • New fossil discoveries uncover big surprises about the roots of species, especially the human race.
  • Scarcity of food and expanding population cry for genetic solutions, leading to restrictions on so-called “Frankenfoods.”
  • New techniques for DNA manipulation fuel the fires. Elimination of hereditary disease through DNA manipulation is contemplated. Though, fear of the unknown and blossoming ethical arguments work against such solutions.
  • Creation of new life and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence instill much inspiration, accompanied by concerns.

In my book, Adam… Forever, protagonist Adam Boatwright is a geneticist who wants to move in new directions to create life. He would incrementally improve lives by eliminating hereditary disease. To gain acceptance, my hero will mold public opinion. One attention-getter is genetics and dinosaurs.

A news interview helps Adam generate interest in his projects. The writer wants to know whether geneticists could bring back Tyrannosaurus Rex from old bones. Enthused, Adam replies that the task would be difficult, but not impossible. He notes that re-engineering T. Rex DNA from fragments of aged bone marrow would be like recreating The Last Supper from random paint chips swept off the floor beneath the original work of art.

Adam goes on to present a more practical solution to the reporter’s fantasy. He notes that modern birds and dinosaurs have common ancestors. Ancestors to any species might be approximated by a process of “reverse evolution.” That would involve a series of small changes to reproductive DNA, each resulting in a living clone hatched from a modified egg.

Adam noted that much time and lots of resources would be required. He said that in a few generations, scientists could go from a turkey to the ancestral version of all related birds. Further generations could bring the primordial bird, followed by a dozen iterations ending with an approximate bird-dinosaur ancestor. All of that might take a hundred years. Then, continuing with further forward-looking changes and guesswork, geneticists could aim to create a descendant having characteristics ascribed to T. Rex.

He notes that the result would not be a T. Rex, but a phony that just looks and acts like the original.

Surrogate Pregnancy, Cattle Breeding, and Mammoths

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Surrogate pregnancy is common in cattle breeding. This involves animal embryo transplantation. In humans the process is popularly called making a “test-tube baby.” In people or cows, test-tube embryos would ordinarily be formed outside the uterus, using an egg and sperm. Zoos may shorten the process using naturally created embryos surgically removed from a biological mother who cannot sustain pregnancy or who succumbs early in pregnancy.

Artificial methods predominate in dairies. Traditional cattle breeders pass good genes from the father using artificial insemination. That way, a top bull can sire more offspring than by sexual intercourse. By using embryo transplants, dairy breeders have gotten a hundred offspring from a good mother, too. Veterinarians can surgically remove a cluster of her eggs and inseminate them in vitro. That way they exploit genes from both parents.

Breeders have created purebred herds using mongrel birth mothers and embryos formed from eggs and sperm of aristocratic parents.

My story in Adam… Forever takes it all to a new level. Adam Boatwright will encourage using embryo transplants with tissues preserved in a woolly mammoth mother and frozen for over ten-thousand years. Dr. Boatwright and veterinarians implant them into elephant surrogate mothers, presumed to have physiology suitable for successfully bringing mammoth calves to life.

Adam’s Theory for Cancer Prevention

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Like most diseases, preventing cancer should be more productive than trying to cure it. In my book, Adam… Forever, protagonist Dr. Adam Boatwright suspects his wife Vera may have the gene BRCA for killer breast cancer. He wants to prevent the malignancies from ever taking hold. Indeed, his discovery may prevent any cancer from ever starting.

Adam envisions a treatment based on making cells divide with absolute accuracy. If feasible, Adam’s procedure would eliminate new cancers. But old cancers would continue unhindered until the end, since they would faithfully replicate themselves forever.

Adam’s treatment would coax the body into manufacturing its own protective chemicals—those that normally combat viral infections and, as a bonus, temporarily prevent cancer. To keep those fighters at work, the body must experience a continuous infection.

It is all based upon a feature exhibited by lip fever-blister virus, herpes simplex. As with most viral diseases, immune system chemistry stops its infections and then quits making virus-killing substances. But lip virus is pushed into dormancy only. That stealthy scourge is still there, ready to re-infect. Adam would genetically engineer a harmless version—a permanent virus that never goes inactive.

Adam knows engineering such a virus would be no small feat. He would begin with mice. A suitable mouse virus would have to be found and altered to withstand forces pushing for dormancy. Each mutation must be tried out on live mice. None can bring horrid effects nor be virulent enough to infect others.

Getting the proper mouse virus would be just the first step. Ultimately, Adam would adapt his experience from mice and modify human lip virus. His prize would be a human virus that never goes dormant and causes negligible symptoms.

Healthy bodies win their battles with disease. Furthermore, physicians always fight disease. Adam plans to do the direct opposite—create a new disease, one that can never be cured.

Explaining the Start of Cancer

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Cancer is a central focus in my book, Adam… Forever. The story revolves around Dr. Adam Boatwright’s urgent need to head-off familial breast cancer in his wife Vera. Both take extreme stances on what ought to be done, so that compromise proves impossible. Much controversy plays out, details of which are not dwelled on here.

Adam adheres to conventional wisdom that a cancer is started by an error in a single dividing cell. During a person’s lifetime, her cells will divide as many as fifty or more times, though Adam knows it’s extremely rare for any splitting cell to launch a cancer.

Errors in dividing cells are a natural part of life. Such mistakes will be mostly benign, though the inaccuracies will accumulate over time. Even erroneous cells copy themselves, carrying their mutations on to daughter tissues. And newer cells are increasing prone to errors as a body ages. That’s why older people wrinkle and go gray.

Cancer cells are different in that they are practically immortal. When they split, they tend to create daughters exactly like their mother cells. Those little parasites will multiply, get in the way, and eventually interfere with bodily functions, causing the host to die. Left undisturbed, cancer cells remain immortal to the end.

Adam finds a way to stop the cell errors themselves, thereby preventing cancer. He fears that would come at a significant cost to the future species.

Good Scientist vs. Good Spouse

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Conflicts between husband and wife make for compelling, sometimes frothy drama. My book, Adam… Forever, takes that to a new level in which a scientist husband and concert-violinist wife both have high-powered careers and health issues.

Dr. Adam Boatwright is a surgeon and geneticist. Vera Boatwright’s mother died from virulent breast cancer. Her sister is apparently dying of the same. But Vera does not want to know whether or not has their killer BRCA gene. Geneticist Adam wants Vera to test for that. His cure is radical mastectomy—a pre-emptive one. But Vera won’t have that career-ender.

Adam could easily steal a saliva sample and run the test. But he realizes that doing so would be seen by Vera as a violation, worse than having an affair. He fears such an act of treason would end his marriage.

Adam finds a unique path through this dilemma, but there is a tremendous price to pay.

When Telling Lies Can Be Preferred to Truth

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Have you ever lied to gain a momentary advantage, like winning a tennis point by calling “out” a ball you know was “fair” or telling your sister to go fish when you have the Old Maid card she requested? Such lies don’t have serious consequences, though as we mature we tend to avoid lying for advantage. Truth-telling becomes internalized, and caught lying would be socially damaging.

In some cases, lying will be acceptable to society, even lauded. Lying for a noble cause can be viewed as heroic. Though, truth-telling may be so ingrained that a fibber loses self-worth by lying even when that furthers a good cause or saves lives.

This may help to appreciate several dilemmas faced by Adam Boatwright, hero in my book, Adam… Forever. He launches a cascade of lies as he begins secret research on a breast-cancer preventive, with himself as a test subject. His immediate concern is condemnation for self-experimentation, which—desperate to save his wife—Adam adopts in haste.

After finding a workable treatment that halts aging as a side effect, Adam confronts a long-term issue. He cannot tell the world he might eliminate cancer because doing so may encourage duplicators who would bring immortality to the human race. Adam is convinced that would bring the world to ruin.

Adam must live on with virtual immortality. Stopping that would be an act of suicide. Meanwhile, he lives on in a young body. If he continues living, he must masquerade as a normally aging person and live lies—forever.

Consequences of Cancer Over-Reaction

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Cancer seems to invoke fear like no other malady. I believe its fearsome reputation stems largely from a perceived high incidence of cancer in the young, a group that where death seems unnatural and certainly unfair. Young people rarely have heart attacks and strokes, leading causes of death in older people.

Cancer a very broad, ill-defined label, with prominence in the minds of healthy people. That leads to over-reacting and focusing on extreme outcomes. Two of the more common maladies, breast cancer and prostate cancer epitomize this.

Mastectomy is deemed by many to be over-treatment on women having a non-virulent form of the malignancy shown on  mammogram. Such radical surgery would certainly diminish a patient’s quality of life and would be tragic if unnecessary. A far less-intrusive procedure would be to excise the cyst, followed by chemical or radiation therapy. Yet, the mere mention of breast cancer brings to mind mastectomy and subsequent disfigurement.

Radical treatment for prostate cancer is similar, with the added feature of the cure often being worse than the disease. A surgical remedy can bring on impotence or incontinence as side effects. Prostate cancer is a natural consequence of aging. Old men tend to have the malady, though they usually die from some other cause.

A bit of a misnomer, the term “cancer” connotes death, though prostate cancer very rarely kills. If the condition carried a different name, such as “prostatic enlargement” or “masculine aging syndrome,” the scourge might have the obscurity it deserves.

In my book, Adam… Forever, surgeon-geneticist Adam Boatwright and violinist wife Vera do over-react to prospective breast cancer. Adam wears blinders and doesn’t consider treatments other than mastectomy, perhaps because he had been a practicing surgeon. His wife won’t consider surgery, which would likely end her concert career. Fearing pressure from her husband, Vera will not even take the test for the BRCA gene, carried by her mother and aunt who both died from breast cancer, and by her dying sister.

All of this leads to a strange dynamic and unpredictable consequences.

Self-Experimentation: Advantages & Disadvantages

Lawrence L. Lapin

Before the advent of modern science, new developments in medicine were strictly hit-or-miss. Early researchers such as Luis Pasteur would experiment on closely-connected subjects—even on themselves. There was no FDA; medical boards and other overseers where yet to come. Though, even then the medical infrastructure offered plenty of criticism and ridicule to new ideas.

Inertia and shunning remain, and now there are constraints as well. With the advent of modern statistics, evaluation tools have been adopted and internalized by researchers themselves. Double-blind studies for innovative treatments assess efficacy and potential harm. Those are needed not only for approvals but  also expected by one’s peers.

Not only has medical research become expensive, it has slowed. People die waiting for vetting processes to run their courses.

Red tape and delay can be frustrating. Much of story told in my book, Adam… Forever, deals with the issue. Echoing the spirit of early medical pioneers, when faced with the prospect of losing his wife to cancer, my hero Adam Boatwright will violate laws and protocols. He will become the Guinea pig while hunting for a preventive for Vera’s familial breast cancer.

Adam is in too much of a hurry to jump traditional hurdles. He is so much in love that he will self-experiment, jeopardizing his career and risking imprisonment.

Prequel to the Adam’s Chronicles series. The story tells how geneticist and surgeon, Adam Boatwright, uses his skills to prevent his wife’s impending cancer. Adam engineers a super virus that continually generates chemicals that fight off viruses and cancer.

As a test, Adam infects himself with that mutant virus. But the side effect is prevention of aging, and he becomes virtually immortal. Convinced that long lives would destroy the human race, Adam becomes caught in a web of intrigue and conspiracy as he tries to stop profiteers from exploiting his super virus.

Cancer Screening: False Positives vs. False Negatives

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Early cancer screening is fraught with two types of errors. The false positive flags an abnormality that later proves absent. The false negative is to let a screened malignancy erroneously remain undetected.

The false positive is quite prevalent with mammograms, especially in younger women. It can lead to unnecessary costly and painful procedures. Early mammograms have been discouraged in young women because follow-on biopsies do cause minor harm and may bring t psychological damage, even when no cancer is found.

False positives are endemic with PSA testing for prostate cancer in men of all ages. PSA screening is not only notoriously unreliable but also cannot distinguish between a smoldering carcinoma that never kills and a hot life-threatening condition

Of course, the false positive must be balanced against the false negative and issues from not screening at all. In the case of mammograms, a strong case has been made for not screening younger women unless there are independent extenuating circumstances. For prostate cancer, older men will often opt not to be tested, as the test gives positive predictions mostly for a cancer that doesn’t kill. The cure in older men becomes much worse than the disease.

In my book, Adam… Forever, the dilemma of false positives and negatives is ratcheted up by orders of magnitude. My story’s hero, Adam Boatwright, is severely conflicted by the potential for cancer in his wife, Vera. Her mother and sister have familial breast cancer of the worst kind. Both carried the BRCA gene. Surgeon Adam pushes his wife to consider pre-emptive mastectomy.

Vera is a professional violinist and might lose her career due to muscle loss from mastectomy. She not only refuses the surgery, but she does not even want to know if she has the killer gene. She dreads fighting off her husband’s demand for pre-emptive surgery should she have the BRCA gene. A geneticist as well as surgeon, Adam continuously faces temptation to gather a DNA sample from a napkin containing his wife’s saliva and get the test for BRCA over with. But he knows that would violate marital trust and might kill his marriage—even if the trouble gene never passed on to Vera.

Desperate, Adam will find a unique solution to this dilemma.
