Whale Restoration, the Greatest Challenge

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

In my post-apocalypse stories told in Adam’s Chronicles, mammals are restored species-by-species using surrogate mothers and embryos preserved from before. A host of issues are encountered, such as compatibility of the mother and implanted baby. Even more perplexing is size differences. Imagine a horse trying to mother an elephant fetus. That might be controlled chemically by keeping the developing baby small enough to fit.

But elephants require more than twice the horse’s natural gestation period, and elephant preemies are not known to survive long. A chain of surrogacies would be required, such as goat-cow-horse-rhinoceros-elephant. It would take decades to get the first pachyderm.

Although I haven’t thoroughly thought this one out (to be detailed in a prequel yet-to-be written), let’s consider how restorers bring back the whales. In my book, Adam’s Pouched Lion, protagonist Adam Boatwright gives a summary of a plausible solution, which would take a couple of centuries.

Adam tells his wife Breeze that those restorations began with seals, the first of which had been carried by dogs. A harbor seal was the earliest restored, and that was done much later than the first elephant. That seal fostered small dolphins.

Like they did in bringing back the elephant, the rescuers would step up the size of mothers so that successive fetuses could be accommodated. Thus, spinner dolphins would carry the larger bottle-nosed. Eventually, large dolphin mothers would carry small toothed-whales. Progressive size steps would culminate in orcas, or killer whales, which are really very big dolphins.

Adam noted that at every step, later bigger animals would be helped by earlier smaller species. All would be guided by people, much like mankind’s sheep dogs had been. Those animal assistants were trainers, nurse maids, and life savers.

Finally, an orca carried smaller species of baleen types, beginning with the smallest—the Minke whale. The blue whale would be the last in a chain of surrogacies of somewhat smaller mother whale species carrying the fetus of a bigger animal, kept small through hormone treatment.

We can only imagine how a rescuer would teach a whale to hunt. I haven’t begun to wrestle with how to implant a fetus in a whale.

Adam Boatwright worries about the future. The long-lived geneticist wants a world with a small human footprint. But he also wants to compensate for the earlier ruin people brought. His ambitious goal is improving the planet’s platform for future evolution. In doing so he has reversed extinctions, starting with woolly mammoths and saber-toothed cats. Can DNA Mapping Help Bring Back Extinct Species?

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Although genetic science is in a dramatic state of advancement, DNA still provides the basic model for lifeform definition and can identify individuals and their genes. The double-helical molecules are signposts, so accurate that even small variations between two DNA letter sequences can be reflected in huge differences between species. For example, the sequence for chimpanzees and humans agree about 99 percent. To complicate matters, individuals within a species also vary, agreeing only about 99.9 percent.

What makes DNA mapping perplexing is that not all genes have been pinpointed. To make matters worse, it may be impossible to tell if a particular letter mismatch signifies a true gene difference as opposed to a slight individual variance.

DNA reconstruction would involve lots of guesswork and demand much trial-and-error experimentation. Doing so is beyond the present genetics state-of-art.

Accurate DNA is crucial to the genetic engineering encountered in my book, Adam’s Pouched Lion. This story tells how geneticist Adam Boatwright will used pieces from an animal whose DNA is incomplete to patch together a whole. He believes that the more complete and contiguous an original DNA’s condition, the better will be the resulting DNA map. Adam will use such patchwork maps to duplicate extinct animals and clone them as living beings.

Dramatic Effect of Restoring a Keystone Species

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Yellowstone National Park provides many insights about nature. One involves a program to restore wolves to the wilderness. That has become an essential part of my stories in the Adam’s Chronicles series, where focus is placed on restoring life after an astronomical calamity. My book, Adam’s Pouched Lion, presents the efforts of dedicated humans who for five centuries have been bringing back to some of the life lost. Long-lived geneticist Adam Boatwright has been leading restoration activities “from behind,” content to let others do the heavy lifting. My books tell why he must keep his age secret.

Several times in my stories, Adam uses the Yellowstone wolves to overcome objections to predator restorations.

Wolves had been brought back to the parklands after a 70-year absence. Until that restoration, elks had lived on without predation. Those big deer multiplied, wreaking havoc to the ecology. They eliminated many plants, thereby displacing small animals, such as beavers. Coyotes became more numerous and over-killed much what remained, including beavers. Predation was essential for the health of elks themselves, which had over-multiplied, becoming scrawny and diseased.

In a short time, the restored wolves halted the elk population surge and kept those big deer on the move, allowing over-grazed plants to thrive. The relocated canines also reduced the coyote population, allowing small mammals to multiply. Beavers returned, and aquatic life and creek sides underwent a renaissance. The wolf regained its historical role as keystone species, making for a richer, more diverse ecology.

Now Adam wants to bring back the Tasmanian tiger-wolf, an animal that played an analogous role on its home island and had once roamed the mainland. Another meat-eater, the marsupial lion, has been extinct far longer. Adam hopes the Yellowstone example might help gain acceptance for using genetic “tricks” to restore that fearsome predator.

Australia Presents Special Challenges to Life Restorers

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Of the six populous continents on Earth, Australia may present the most challenging biology for re-wilding or restoration. Such activities are reflected in my futuristic book, Adam’s Pouched Lion, which takes place after our Planet has been hit by a larger “dinosaur killer.” The story focuses on the planet-wide life-restoration efforts led by long-lived geneticist Adam Boatwright, who has been a plant and animal rescuer for over five centuries.

Adam wears many hats, including being a world-class ecologist and government official. The scientist is temporarily working in Australia. Even now he marvels that the continent had been populated by pouched mammals, the marsupials. Such animals had been way under-represented in the wilds of other continents, where placental mammals dominated. Odder still, was the proliferation of reptiles in Australia, especially poisonous ones.

From the outset of restorations, Adam had been zealous at insisting that all restored life be brought back only to places where they had evolved. He remembers well the troubles invasive species brought to the pre-meteor world. With most lost in the giant meteor’s aftermath, proper balance is easily maintained simply by placing native plants and animals in their original homes. After all, Nature had sorted things out over millions of years of evolution.

Thus, except for platypuses and their spiny-anteater cousins, all ground mammals restored in Australian wilderness are marsupials. The post-calamity continent’s only non-flying or non-aquatic placentals are pets, agricultural livestock, or zoo creatures. And few farm animals are needed—nearly all of them birds or grazers, such as sheep and dairy cows. Only licensed breeders are allowed to keep any animals with intact reproductive systems.

Now Adam wants to bring back certain species gone extinct long-before the astronomical disaster.

Residences for a Restored World

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Imagine life on Earth, years after a devastating astronomical event has wiped out most life on the Planet. That is the backdrop for my stories in the Adam’s Chronicles series. They tell how the few surviving humans begin restoring life by colonizing habitable zones. At the outset, they either provide their own temporary living quarters or they squat in whatever livable housing can be found. Eventually, they arrange more suitable habitat.

In my book, Adam’s Pouched Lion, the life rescuers are still at it, five centuries after Earth had been hit by a bigger “dinosaur killer.” Residences in their new world are designed for a raw environment with few amenities. They must be easy to build, be eco-friendly, endure harsh climates, and maximize solar energy while minimizing fuels.

The new homes in my stories are therefore circular, single-storied, and sunken into the ground. That maximizes comfort and energy efficiency. Egress for such easily built homes is through a wedge-shaped great room. Living areas resemble shortened pieces of pie, narrowing to a round access “hallway” at the building’s center. A few bigger round buildings are multi-storied with spiraling stairs at the center. Most are not connected to any electrical grid and depend on solar-generated electricity incorporating reliable battery storage.

In this new world, people avoid life in extreme climates and spend a majority of time away from home.

Funding Life Restoration Projects

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

Suppose a scientist could for a time stop the aging process in his body. He does not know how long he will live, but he has reached the point where his chronological age is over ten times that suggested by a youthful appearance. You might say the man is virtually immortal.

Meet Adam Boatwright, protagonist superhero of my stories in the Adam’s Chronicles series. In my book, Adam’s Tiger, Adam continues leading “from behind,” nudging along a massive life-restoration project. For five centuries he has inspired others to nurture the Planet on its recovery from astronomical disaster, a meteor impact more severe than the dinosaur killer.

Adam cannot share the truth about his age, lest others attempt to pursue immortality. Adam uses the Restoration of Life Foundation to accomplish his mission while remaining anonymous. Its resources fund Adam’s projects and give the aged geneticist freedom to move restorations along.

Though an honorary Foundation director, Adam remains aloof from day-to-day management of the organization, which he started during early restorations. Adam is content to let others handle mundane management, and the Foundation is immensely rich. Its massive fortune is quietly invested in infrastructure for improving people’s lives.

The aged scientist has sway with the directors, and he ordinarily gets whatever he wants. Nobody in the Foundation knows Adam’s true age—not even its chairman. In my story the head director is a self-made millionaire who sails his yacht through southern seas, just to see Adam. My superhero is the true restoration leader and will pull strings to obtain financing for a strange new project.

Genetic Tinkering after Astronomical Catastrophe

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

There is considerable controversy today arising from genetic tinkering. There is fear amongst the public regarding GMOs (genetically modified organisms). It is a common occurrence to see newspaper stories about farm-bred fish that grow many times faster than wild counterparts, about food crops that carry mutations to resist herbicides, or about tomatoes that have longer shelf-lives. As a consequence, the organic food industry gains ever-increasing market share, certain imported foods are banned, and labelling laws get strengthened.

Genetic modification offers many benefits. Most promising: mosquito reproductive systems can be altered so that females lay unfertilized eggs, and entire generations of a pest are never born. That seems like a good way to eliminate the spread of malaria and other insect-borne diseases. But there are fears that beneficial creatures might also be interrupted, with unknown consequences.

Issues from genetic tinkering would still be of concern, even after a massive “dinosaur killer.” Though, such concerns would be less compelling during restoration of the Planet. My book, Adam’s Pouched Lion, does not ignore the dangers from genetic interventions. Indeed, a major portion of the story concerns tinkering with virus DNA. I won’t spoil my plot here, but it is easy to imagine the worst consequences from playing god with viruses.

Two Kinds of Hairy People

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

As noted in a recent posting regarding the story line of my Adam’s Chronicles books, hairy people and their ape ancestors are different species, though it is hard to tell them apart. The genetically modified hairy ones are on a par with humans, and the three kinds of people form a harmonious society. There is little interaction between wilderness apes and their hairy cousins who live among humans.

One of the characters in the story is the hairy woman Borena, who descends in the bonobo line of hairy people. She temporarily lives amongst wild bonobos while doing research on that species.

Though often confused with chimpanzees, bonobos are a totally different creatures. Both apes have DNA equally close to humans, and the two ape genomes are as different from each other’s as from that of humans.

In my story, odd naming customs prevail among the hairy people. Beginning with the very first bonobos restored, names have a prefix “Bo” attached. Thus, Borena, Borex, Boellen, became popular. Even names like Bopeep and Bojangles had been used. With chimpanzees, the early names took on the “Ch” prefix. That led to Chelsea, Chips, Chita, and so on.

Chimpanzee persons are depicted as having big egos and eventually abandon the “Ch” in favor of more pretentious names. As the story moves on, all persons of chimpanzee stock are given Greek names, like Demosthenes, Agamemnon, and Plato.

I took poetic license to breathe life into the hairy characters. In keeping with their extremely macho personalities, people of chimpanzee stock speak with guttural intonations. They are very bright and outperform humans in several ways. The nouveau people wear togas and are a bit intimidating to other members of society, though they try very hard to smooth out the rough edges. Those chimpanzee descendants are very, very different from the other hairy people.

Those are people of bonobo extraction who speak with a high-pitched nasal twang. Humans seem to be more comfortable around these highly intuitive beings and often wonder if these hairy people can read their minds.

The latest story in this series is Adam’s Pouched Lion.

In the works are bringing back long-dead keystone Australian predators: Tasmanian tiger-wolves and marsupial lions.

Great book, it is the kind of book you can’t wait to read again—Sandra Potter, Amazon Reviewer.

I am fascinated by the quality of this book. … A wonderful blend of thrilling adventure, science fiction and romance. … It delivers on so many different levels. Well done—Dennis Waller, Top 500 Amazon Reviewer.

This story had every element … an exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. Abundance of well-illustrated scenes. … had me immersed from the beginning. The story flows … with ease, and the author shows exceptional skill when it comes to storytelling. … Twists and turns in this page turner … make you want to read it non-stop. … Highly recommended—Piaras, Amazon Reviewer.

Phenomenal series offers elements of the thriller, mystery, science fiction, and romance genres. Dr. Lapin’s novels are exciting, with wonderfully developed characters and situations—Jada Ryker, Top 1,000 Amazon Reviewer.

Mad scientist or brave hero? … A murder mystery, medical thriller, and science fiction novel all rolled into one. I recommend it highly—Diane Rapp, Amazon Reviewer.

A fast paced story so plausible that I had trouble figuring the line where science fact and science fiction resides. … That credibility made the debate about the desirability of immortality real instead of fantasy. … An entertaining read—Capt’n Bob, Amazon Reviewer.

A Multi-Species Society

Lawrence L. Lapin

@LarryLLapin

The Adam’s Chronicles series involves hairy people of two species, both originating from their wild ancestors. Their launch is an interesting story in itself.

As you may know by now, my survival tale begins with a piece of Comet Icarus ready to make a “dinosaur-killing” sized splash into Earth. The main body of survivors—who will ultimately be led by superhero Adam Boatwright—emerge from their underground refuge and take on a mission to rescue life all over the Planet. They and their children plan keep that going indefinitely.

Unfortunately, all adult males would become sterile from radiation emitted from rocks within the cavern walls. The only potential father would be a four-year old boy born underground. The rescuers would wait to have their own children.

By the time Sean became a teenager, most women would be too old to naturally bear their own kids. In the meantime, one impatient woman volunteered to carry chimpanzee embryos that had been saved from before the calamity. Others followed her example and became pregnant with implants of three different ape species. Not only did that dramatically verify a key procedure for restoring mammals through interspecies surrogacy, but it also conditioned aged human bodies to later carry their own children. The pregnancies would begin long after menopause, and the babies would be fathered ex utero by teen Sean.

Fed mind enhancers, the restored apes would be reared by humans, with whom they could communicate by sign language. The animals would become super smart and fill in gaps that would have been occupied by human children.

Two ape species, a majority of the restored chimpanzees and bonobos, would receive all the rights of people. They would live in harmony together with humans. But those tame apes would want oral speech and want to walk like human people. They would request that their children be genetically modified to do so. The hairy people thus would become new species of people, distinct from their wild bonobo and chimpanzee cousins. The wilderness apes would lead primitive lifestyles like their ancestors, on opposite sides of the Congo River and apart from humans.

My book, Adam’s Pouched Lion, tells more about the hairy people and how they relate to their wilderness cousins.

Converting Female DNA into Male DNA

Lawrence L. Lapin

Twitter: @LarryLLapin

My earlier blogs discuss bringing back an extinct animal by finding its bones and patching together strands of DNA extracted from the marrow to get a good whole. That DNA molecule would then be inserted into a vacuated egg from a related species. The final step would involve a cloning-type procedure with that ovum.

Assuming that all of this can be done successfully, the result would be a baby genetically equal to the bone’s owner—an animal that had been extinct for thousands of years. What would the restorers do next?

Presuming that the young animal is female, the scientists could begin a breeding program, starting with this baby. She would be carried to term and nurtured by her foster mom (a female from another species), all supervised by veterinarians and biologists. Perhaps the first baby’s twin sisters would be created too, forming a little group that would help start a wild population.

The restored animals would all be clones until more bones were found and fresh genes became available. Only after the remains of a male are discovered could the species be properly launched. Until that milestone, twin sisters would be implanted with other clones, and all mothers would nurture and teach subsequent generations of females. That might take hundreds of years, with continuous involvement by tenders and scientists.

A bolder approach might speed the process considerably through the artificial creation of a male using a DNA strand of a cloned female that is unrelated to the eventual biological mother of the new boy. This would be strictly science-fictional, genetic “black magic,” though do-able in the abstract. Human breeders would have to insert the Y-chromosome from a male of a different species, patch it up to make it compatible, splice that into the original DNA package, and strip away the female parts (mitochondrial DNA).

The result of all of that might be a freak, and the whole experiment might have to be repeated many times with corrections being made to each successive male DNA. This could also take centuries (just seconds, in geological time).

All of this is just hinted at in my story Adam’s Pouched Lion, as the bone search for Marsupial Lion femurs goes on.
